Nationally recognized publication places the SCV at number 10 of top western towns.
What goes through your mind when you think of a “western” town? Perhaps you’re taken back to visions of those old TV westerns such as Gunsmoke
or Bonanza. Or maybe you’re a diehard western fan with visions of a horse ranches and wide open spaces.
That being said, what does make a town a truly western town? According to True West magazine, there are several aspects of a town or city that they used to make their most recent list of Top True Western Towns For 2015. They ranked Santa Clarita at number 10.
It’s about history, western history to be more exact. It’s about outlaws, settlers, gunfighters, ranchers and sodbusters. All which are examples of Santa Clarita’s past. Yes, we’ve had them all! It’s also about the preservation of western roots, buildings, stories and heritage. All again which the Santa Clarita Valley does pretty well.
Take William S. Hart Park for example. Its namesake, while perhaps not a true cowboy, personified the old west through dozens of movies in the 1920’s. The park itself was once land owned by the silent movie actor, and his mansion on the top of the hill (Constructed between 1924-28), is now a museum that has preserved many western artifacts and reminds us of a simpler time.
Old Town Newhall’s recent facelift reminds us of the earlier time in Santa Clarita’s history. With wooden sidewalks, hitching posts, and rustic facades, it’s now a great place to visit, shop, dine, and take in some local theater. The Out West Western Boutique & Cultural Center, located on 6th Street, is dedicated to the promotion of the true old west.
If you’re looking for truly “ranch style” country living, two communities at the north end of the Santa Clarita Valley might be
right up your alley. The towns of Acton and Agua Dulce have maintained the character and small town charm of the old west. Agua Dulce is also home to Vasquez Rocks Natural Area, named after Tiburcio Vasquez, a real life bandit who used the area to hide from local law enforcement in 1873 an 1874.
Santa Clarita is truly a modern city with more than just a dash of western charm. It’s also one of the top 20 best cities for young families.
