Believe it or not, the town of Saugus was the first community formed in the Santa Clarita Valley. Henry Mayo Newhall named it in honor of his hometown of Saugus, Massachusetts, after he purchased Rancho San Francisco (What is now known as The Santa Clarita Valley) in 1875. He granted right-of-way for the Southern Pacific Railroad Company, and a town was born.
For many years however, Saugus took a backseat to the Santa Clarita Valley community of Newhall, which sprung into a prosperous community. Saugus remained a farm and ranch community until the Bonelli tract homes (the first tract homes in Santa Clarita, by the way) broke ground in 1950. The Bonelli homes are still there and attract many first time home buyers to the community.
Saugus over the years has developed into a wonderful bedroom enclave. Offering diverse housing, it is great for anyone looking for a community with its own distinct personality, while still being only minutes from downtown Santa Clarita and easy commuter access to freeways.
The Saugus area is very family-oriented, with plenty of parks, shopping, and great schools. Central Park, located on
Bouquet Canyon, is a great place to take the kids. Baseball fields, basketball courts, a frisbee golf area, playpark, and a dog park are just a few of the amenities available. Central Park also hosts a variety of concerts and events that are open to the public.
As for housing, Saugus offers a variety of starter condo and townhomes, single family homes, and even ranch-style properties. So no matter what your budget, you can find a home you will love!
